Hello There!
Now that you are finally here, let me reveal a little secret about me. I actually have no idea about cooking. If you are still reading further (I hope you are), I’m sure you you are thinking why I put up a cooking blog of all the things in the whole wide world! Now that might sound like a bad idea to you, but let me tell you THE SELFISH MOTIVE behind all of this!
Being born in a typical Mangalorean Konkani home, I have had Mangalorean food from the day I was born and I LOVE the taste of what mum makes at home. Right from the curries to the sweet dishes, Mangalorean cuisine is unique in its own way whether it's the blend of flavors or the approach of cooking and being born and brought up in Mumbai, I don’t get my hands (and tongue) on the recipes apart from mums cooking at home.
The kind of variety we Mangaloreans have in Food is MASSIVE! Way back when I was in school, I remember how my friends would leave the Dosa's and Idli's aside and finish the chutney which was a different one every time. Yes! There are different types of really appetizing Chutneys and I made my mum pack close to 15 different varieties of just Chutney for my friends! Of course there are more than 15, but mum would have definitely made a Chutney out of me had I put forth more chutney demands! So, for the love of Mangalorean food, I considered writing a blog where I could compile all the recipes mom makes which will not just be of great use to me after I get married off but also to folks like you who would love to try something new. And probably in the midst of writing the recipes, I may get motivated to try some on my own! (Fingers crossed!)
Unlike recipes of other parts of the country, Mangalorean cuisine hasn't really garnered the kind of attention it deserves. You might find the recipes over the Internet but you might not find the perfect blend of ingredients to get that perfect taste. The variety of recipes that Mangalorean's (GSB's, Konkani, Saraswat's) prepare are unique in taste. You might find the names of curries like Colombo and Khatkhato scary or funny, but trust me they are really flavorsome and exceptionally healthy. You might end up filling the plate with more rice just to finish the tempting curry. (Watch out for your weight though!)
So
if you are still interested in visiting this Food Blog from someone who doesn't know how to cook, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for believing in me! :)
On a serious note, this wouldn't have been possible without the guidance of my mother and brother (Yes! I’m the only member who doesn't cook. Such a shame, I know!)
Keep checking this space for a new Mangalorean recipe every week!
Cheers & Happy Cooking,
Divyashree
